Abstract
In Agustin Martin Rodrguez's book entitled "Mula Bayang Sawi Hanggang lupang Hinirang: Ang Pag-uunawa ng Pilipino sa Pilipinas," he continued his philosophical project that discusses the different rationalities in a society. However, in this book, Rodriguez's enrichment of the discourse regarding the inequitable and unequal enjoyment of development took on a more historical bent. Drawing from different periods in Philippine history, Rodriguez demonstrated how the pursuit of freedom and justice is not just an abstract issue, but are concepts that permeate many dimensions of the Filipinos and the hardships and oppressions they endure. Although the lack of philosophical analysis in other parts of the book can be criticized due to the use of different ideas and interpretations by scholars in different disciplines, this review will show that the book has a philosophical challenge for Filipinos: to define development not only for oneself but also for one's kapwa. This message that emerges in the book shows that the face of oppression is not only in foreign invaders but also in Filipinos who decided to elevate themselves, even if it means stepping over other people's lives.
